About

Alice Jarry

Alice Jarry's installations combine a poetic approach with meticulous craftsmanship. She explores the question of assemblages and the impact of materiality in the generation of dynamic forms, accidental and fleeting. Put that way, it could all seem terribly complicated and yet, it is first and foremost extremely sensitive. Her work has been presented in prestigious locations and events such as Automata, the third International Digital Arts Biennial in Montreal, the Invisible Dog Art Center in New York, Mois Multi in Quebec,
the Device_Art Triennial in Zagreb, as part of Mons 2015, European Capital of Culture and in several exhibition locations in Canada, the United States and Europe. Alice Jarry is a member of Perte de signal, an artist run media arts research and development centre based in Montreal. She is a PhD candidate in Études et pratiques des arts (UQAM) and teaches Computation Arts at Concordia University.

In Situ : Networks and Materiality

How can a site-specific practice foster a critical reflection on the impact of materiality in digital arts? In her installation work, Alice adopts a kind of Material Complicity* that develops according to specific spaces. From the recycling facility to the museum, this process puts forward a productive alliance with matter that generates ephemeral, unstable and precarious forms. In this conference, she addresses the complex entanglements of the industrial, social and natural spheres embedded in this process and highlights the distributed agencies at play, inseparable from this kind of practice: Scarce material resources, technologies, exhibition spaces, industrial transformation processes, time passing by, local communities and human  intervention.
