About KIKK

Kikk Festival

14th Edition - Boom boom tchak

Founded in Namur in 2011, the non-profit organization KIKK is committed to building bridges between the arts, sciences, culture and technology. KIKK transforms and densifies space. Free-spirited and daring, KIKK stands between technological innovation and creativity, refreshing the foundations of a reinvented economy.

On a daily basis, KIKK organizes events, stages exhibitions, supports the production of artistic works and participates in the emergence of new projects, which it then supports and promotes.

With an eye to the horizon and beyond, and a fierce tendency to cross-disciplinary clearing: the association is organic.

It evolves, impetuous, according to the seasons, carried by winds and tides, that it never covers twice in the same way. Its aim: to mix fields, genres and generations, to question the multiple uses of new technologies, and in so doing, foreshadow the new challenges of a world on the move.

Every year, KIKK organizes the eponymous international festival in Namur, which showcases digital practices in the broadest sense. For its 13th edition in 2024, the event attracted over 28,000 visitors (professionals and the curious alike) from nearly 50 nationalities.
This year, the KIKK Festival dives into the sonic and acoustic universe, exploring the profound relationship between rhythm, sound, and life itself. Rhythm is the invisible force orchestrating our world—from the circadian rhythms guiding sleep and wake cycles to the tides, the changing seasons, and the revolutions of celestial bodies. It is the pulse of existence, woven into the lives of plants, animals, and even the smallest organisms.

BOOM BOOM TCHAK

The festival will embrace the musicality of life and delve into the evolution of sound, from natural rhythms to the transformative power of electronic music. Electronic music, with its roots in futurism and modernity, has not only shaped cultural traditions but also fostered the development of digital and technological art. This exploration extends to the intersection of artificial intelligence and sound creation, unveiling new possibilities for sonic expression.

We’ll investigate the fascinating world of wave phenomena—interference, resonance, feedback loops—and their connections to folklore, ritual, and tradition. Sound, universal and primal, unites us across cultures, evoking mystical experiences and altered states of consciousness. From polyphonic chants to the hypnotic beat of a drum, sound connects us to the ancient origins of humanity and the cosmos itself.

The program will highlight data sonification, enabling us to grasp complex phenomena—whether in the vastness of the universe, the depths of the ocean, or the inaudible frequencies of infra- and ultrasound. We’ll amplify the hidden symphonies of plants, animals, and natural elements, and explore how sound reveals the invisible: the vibrations of our hearts, the whispers of the wind, and the rhythmic patterns found in everyday life.

From the primal heartbeat heard in the womb to the creation of music through our voices, hands, and bodies, sound is deeply embedded in our essence. Boom boom tchak—a fundamental rhythmic pattern, universally recognized in electronic music and beyond—symbolizes the essence of beat-making, the interplay of bass and snare, and the driving force behind movement and dance. It is the archetypal backbone of countless musical styles, from tribal drumming to techno, hip-hop, and house music. In this festival edition, we celebrate this universal beat as a bridge between the organic and the synthetic, the ancestral and the futuristic, merging the visual and the acoustic to illuminate the harmony, mystery, and infinite possibilities of sound.
