From Story to System : The Next Ten Years of African Creative Technology
Electric South began with a simple but radical goal: to introduce African artists to new and emerging storytelling technologies — from XR and VR to the wider world of immersive media. Over the years, it has trained, mentored, and produced the works of more than 200 artists across the continent, creating space for African creators to experiment and imagine new digital futures.
But as the field matured, one truth became clear: building capacity alone was not enough. For the ecosystem to thrive, the structural issues – access, infrastructure, funding, ethics, and representation, had to be addressed.
Today, Electric South is evolving beyond production into a role as re-grantor, connector, and advocate, shaping policy, strengthening creative infrastructure, and building trust with governments, funders, and global partners.
This talk reflects on Electric South’s journey and looks ahead to the next decade: a future where Africa’s creative technologists lead the conversation on innovation, equity, and digital imagination.
