Rocío Álvarez x Interval

Biography

Rocío Álvarez
Illustrator, painter and director of animated shorts
multi-awarded (Anima, Les Magritte, Kuando Taiwan, Fantasia
Montréal, Cartoon d’or…), Rocío Álvarez also creates large
murals in public spaces and for museums (MIMA,
Film Fest Gent, Musée des Sciences Naturelles, Métro Simonis…).
She likes to vary forms and techniques as the mood takes her, and
themes that are dear to her: human sexuality and misogyny
in Simbiosis Carnal, the circular economy for Circularium, or
biodiversity for the 50th anniversary of Greenpeace.

Interval.ooo
interval is a new studio based between Brussels and Barcelona that initiates
projects with and for artists.
Focusing on the dialogue between the graphic arts and contemporary
digital creation, interval specializes in bringing ideas, images
and narratives into public spaces, on city walls and museums.
Outside the confines of the screen, page or frame, Interval is interested in
the space between still and moving images, in the superimposition of
ink and pixels.

Rocío Álvarez x Interval

Hybrid figures, shifting avatars, mutating identities: humanity has never ceased to reinvent itself through stories in which metamorphosis is a passage between worlds. From legends of humans becoming beasts under the effect of a spell or a deep-seated desire, to contemporary fantasies of fusion with the machine, the theme of transformation runs through the ages. Metamorphosis is both a quest for emancipation and a source of anxiety. Today, as the boundary between the real and the virtual becomes blurred, our relationship with transformation is evolving. We are both creators and subjects of these mutations. Masks are digitized, identities fragmented and doubles multiplied. The installation explores these transitions from one state to another, these thresholds where the human dialogues with the animal, the vegetable, the simulacrum and the algorithm.

Designed for public spaces, the installation is composed of a monumental device inspired by the principle of the zoetrope: a circular cylinder that gives the illusion of movement through a succession of images. Invited by the Interval.ooo studio, artist Rocío Álvarez deploys a colorful visual universe blending illustration, animation and fragmented narration. Through a series of hypnotic tableaux, she questions our representations of the body, identity and our relationship to both living beings and algorithms.

Between wandering and contemplation, this hybrid work invites you to a sensory and poetic experience, at the crossroads of the intimate and the collective, the tangible and the imaginary.
