Amelie Dinh and Iris Cuppen work at design and technology studio Bakken & Bæck—Amelie as the Head of Strategy, Iris as the Head of Communications. In between their day-to-day projects, they have been exploring the many questions and opportunities arising within the ever-changing landscape of emerging tech. Recent projects include developing windows into image-generating neural networks, exploring the shape, nature and influence of tech hype, and investigating the narrative landscape of AI.
On Hype
The metaverse, web3, generative AI — today’s tech hypes seem to boom and bust faster than ever before. As one hype quickly replaces the next, we wondered about the broader phenomenon at work. What is hype, how does it circulate, and what does it mean to create in its wake?
In this talk, we take the audience on a stroll through a recent tech hype, looking not for truth or proof or broken promises, but for the rhetorical turns that allow it to wax and wane.
Drawing on examples — videos, tweets, memes, images, headlines — we examine the voices and stories that gave shape to hype, and reflect on where that leaves us.
