Sonic Connections: Public Art for a Shared World
For nearly two decades, Yuri Suzuki has explored how sound can connect people in public space. His large-scale interactive installations—such as Sonic Playground in Atlanta, The Welcome Chorus in Kent, and Sound of the Earth—invite audiences of all ages to play, listen, and participate. By transforming sound into a social medium, his works create moments of curiosity and empathy between strangers, bridging cultural and linguistic divides.
In this talk, Suzuki will share his journey of developing public art that is both playful and deeply rooted in community. He will discuss how sound functions not only as an artistic material, but also as a tool for building social bonds, encouraging collective imagination, and reshaping our shared environments. From horns that carry voices across a park, to soundscapes generated from local communities, Suzuki’s practice reflects a belief that art in public space should spark joy, dialogue, and connection.
Through case studies, reflections, and future projects, Suzuki will invite the audience to consider: what does it mean to create art for everyone? And how might sound help us design more inclusive, resonant, and humane public spaces?
